Jeter and fellow inductees Ted Simmons and Larry Walker met with the media on Thursday ahead of Wednesday’s Hall of Fame ceremony in Cooperstown, New York, the first since the coronavirus epidemic canceled the 2020 celebrations.
It will have been about 21 months after Simmons received word that he had been picked by the veterans committee, and around 20 months since Jeter and Walker were chosen in the annual round of Baseball Writers’ Association of America balloting.
A speech takes a long time to prepare. Jeter, on the other hand, said that his work is not yet complete.
“Right now, we’re still going through the process,” Jeter stated. “As a result, I’m not done yet. Jon [Shestakofsky, Hall of Fame vice president of communications] is probably furious with me right now since they told me I had to submit it a month ago. I’ve been trying to take my time with it.”
When confronted with a huge audience stretched out across the grounds of the Clark Sports Center, situated on the outskirts of Cooperstown, one needn’t worry about the unflappable Jeter turning up out of sorts. After all, he thrived over a 20-year career under baseball’s brightest lights.
“I’m looking forward to getting up there and seeing the museum and meeting and spending time with all of the Hall of Famers, as well as the ceremony and speech,” Jeter added. “I’m trying to get those thoughts out of my head because I don’t want to walk in there with any preconceived ideas about what could happen.”
While his post-playing reputation as owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins is still evolving, Jeter’s playing career’s ultimate aim was to be remembered as a New York Yankee.
He definitely did that, spending his entire professional career with the Yankees and amassing 3,465 hits for the team, the sixth most in franchise history.
“People [ask] what I want to be remembered as the most significant thing throughout my career,” Jeter remarked. “I’d want to be known as a Yankee.” That was the end of it. For as long as I can remember, it was the only team I ever wanted to play for. That’s how I envisioned my legacy.
“But it’s much more than what you do on the field, as I discovered when I began playing professionally. It’s what you leave behind when you leave the field.”
In the most recent round of BBWAA voting, no candidates were chosen, and the veterans committee that was supposed to meet at the postponed 2020 winter conference was unable to do so. As a result, with no new entrants, Simmons, Jeter, and Walker will be inducted into the Hall as the Class of 2020 at a ceremony in 2021.
“I’m looking forward to getting up there, seeing the museum, and meeting and spending time with all of the Hall of Famers, as well as the ceremony and speech. I’m trying to keep those thoughts out of my head because I don’t want to walk in with any preconceived ideas about what may happen.”

After last year’s postponement, all three were questioned about their lengthy wait for induction day.
Simmons said that it was “Both positive and negative aspects are present. It’s bad because you’ll have to wait an extra year, but it’s wonderful because it’ll be prolonged another year.” After his election, Jeter claimed he “really didn’t think about it much” since there was so much going on in the globe. Walker, who was elected on the BBWAA ballot in his last year of eligibility, simply said, “There is no need to be concerned. What’s another year when you’ve already waited ten?”
Simmons, in contrast to Jeter’s lengthy speech preparation, claimed he “went straight to work” after being chosen. Walker admitted to having restless nights both throughout the speech-writing process and as the induction date approaches.
“There are evenings when I don’t sleep,” Walker said. “And there are evenings when I don’t get much sleep because everything is running through my mind when I wake up. Believe me when I say that the butterflies are here today, and there are a lot of them.”
If it helps Walker relax, he may think about how Jeter will likely get the lion’s share of the spotlight next week when Yankees fans from all across the state and beyond descend on the stadium. The event will take place three days before the 20th anniversary of 9/11, a time in American and baseball history during which the Yankees, led by Jeter, played a key role in the subsequent healing process.
These emotions are certain to be heard loud and clear next week, as Cooperstown welcomes its largest audience in almost two years.

We had the impression that we were competing for something bigger than ourselves. We were performing for the whole city of New York. Sports, in my opinion, play an important part in the healing process for many communities at different periods.”
